Such system would charge during periods of low or even negative electricity prices, typically in the summer, and discharge when prices peak, usually in the winter. Electro-thermal energy storage

The system, which is an electro-thermal energy storage, uses probes to inject and extract thermal energy. Our unique patent-pending technology allows generating electricity without the need for costly heat exchangers and pumps. In addition, charging losses are minimized by using electrical heating elements placed directly inside the probes.

Depending on the size of the system, its energy losses can be kept below 5% over a year. The larger the system, the lower the losses due to the favorable volume/surface ratio.

This facility can be constructed in any location, even on the premises of decommissioned coal or nuclear power plants, by utilizing the existing infrastructure. The effectiveness of the system is contingent on the type of steam turbine employed, with efficiency typically falling within the 40-45% range. If the facility is situated in close proximity to urban areas, the total efficiency could be enhanced by harnessing the waste heat generated during electricity production for district heating. The system could be designed to provide heat only, for example, for industrial use.

Remarkably, this price is significantly lower than the cost of natural gas before the Russian invasion.

The renewable energy stored during these periods of low electricity prices can serve as a valuable resource for replacing fossil fuels in electricity production, and unlike costly and energy-intensive hydrogen solutions, our system offers a more economical and efficient pathway to a clean energy future. As renewable energy sources continue to grow, the gap between the lowest and highest electricity prices will widen, making energy storage increasingly lucrative.
